HM Submarine E6 left Harwich on 26th December, 1915, to carry out an anti-submarine patrol in the North Sea. Passing the Sunk Light Vessel, just off the coast near Harwich, she was warned by a torpedo boat to keep clear of the area because mines had been laid there by the German submarine UC-5. For reasons unknown this warning was not heeded and HM Submarine E6 hit a mine and sank with the loss of 31 lives, including Stoker William Horwood
